It is said that there’s a fine line between love and hate. Sometimes, it’s even possible for a person to love and hate someone at the same time.
Love, betrayal and revenge are core themes in Even After Death novel. Surrounded by secrets, schemes and lies, Ethan and Olivia must find their way to each other in order to overcome their enemies.

Part 1: The Love And Betrayal Themes in Even After Death
Throughout the entire story, there’s an endless series of betrayals and deceits that only make the gap between Ethan and Olivia grow larger and larger.
Even when one of them would do something to get closer to the other, as you’ll see in Even After Death chapter 19, something would happen that would cause them to drift apart again.
It’s very interesting how someone who claims to love a person so much would be able to hurt the other so bad. Ethan is determined to make Olivia pay for his sister’s demise, even though she had nothing to do with it.
And, although he restlessly torments her, he also looks out for her. It’s actually a twisted thing. He enjoys harming her, yet he can’t stand someone else giving her the bad eye, let alone touch her in any way.
Ethan loves and hates Olivia altogether, never being able to tell whether he loves or loathes her more. The same thing happens later with his sister when it turns out she had been alive all this time. He is thrilled that she is alive, he is fond of her but he also hates her for breaking him and Olivia apart.
When it comes to Marina, it’s obvious, at least for us the readers, that Ethan doesn’t love her. His duty towards his friend seems to be bigger than his love for his wife though. He promised his friend he would look after Marina and her child and even allowed everyone assume he had actually fathered the baby.
One of the worse deceits, at least in my opinion, is Ethan’s boldness to take away Olivia’s baby when he was born and have Marina raise him as his own. He even lied to Olivia that the child was dead, betraying and hurting her in the most despicable way possible.
No matter if he believed that Jeff, Olivia’s father, was responsible for Leia’s death, he should have never separated the woman from her child. After all, time proved the fact that Marina never got to actually cherish the boy, nor did the little man ever consider Marina as his mother. His bond to Olivia was stronger even without knowing his true origin.
In the end, it looks like everybody deceived everybody. Ethan betrayed and tormented the love of his life endlessly. He also lied to his own child about his birth mother, not to mention the fact that he kept tricking Marina into waiting for setting a real date for their wedding.
Although Olivia started off as a sincere young girl, her husband’s vileness pushed her to her limits and she had no choice but to retaliate. She also lied to Ethan and deceived him. Olivia even tried to harm Connor, her little boy, not knowing their blood relation. Fortunately, her conscience always worked in her favor and she stopped before doing anything irreparable.
Setting aside the non-stop betrayals happening in Even After Death novel, I also have to acknowledge the love connections and honest friendships that have established throughout Olivia and Ethan’s journey.
There’s Ethan and Olivia’s love-hate story. In the beginning, he is the one loathing her, while she still hopes to redeem her marriage, but as the story progresses, things change considerably.
Ethan will let go of his hate and pride and start pursuing Olivia admitting his love for her, while all she wants now is revenge because she despises her ex-husband.
While Even After Death Olivia can’t always count on her husband’s support, she can always count on Everly, Keith, Colin and even Aaron. They become honest friends who cherish Olivia and look out for her well-being. These friendships are even stronger than her relationship with Ethan.
Often, they put themselves in the line of fire just to protect the woman. In the end, it seems that her friends trust her more than her own husband ever did.
Part 2: Highlight Chapter In Even After Death
One of the most intense chapters in Even After Death novel is surely chapter 19. It shows us a glimpse of the struggle going on in Ethan’s heart as he still desires Olivia, yet he acts as if he’s disgusted with her.
Even After Death Chapter 19
Holding Olivia’s ankle, Ethan imagines just how it would be to crush it in just one move. The girl looks at the man with hatred in her eyes and, reminiscing about him touching Marina and having children with her, she urges her husband to let her go.
Ethan doesn’t listen to Olivia’s plea. On the contrary, her words only stir his desire and he kisses her lips fiercely. Imagining Ethan’s lips touching Marina’s before coming to her make Olivia feel sick to her stomach, so she immediately pushes him away, ready to heave by the bed.
Seeing her feeling sick after kissing him intrigues Ethan, who believes that Olivia is so disgusted by him that he made her feel nauseous. He is even sure that his wife is interested in someone else now.
