Part 1: Main Story Of The Novel When There Is Nothing Left But Love
This incredible story revolves around Julia, a beautiful, humble woman, married to the handsome, rich Curtis. Although she finds herself in a loveless union with her husband, she never stopped hoping he would come to love and cherish her one day.
Unfortunately, marriage was forced upon Curtis by his grandfather, thus he seems to despise his wife, all the while tending to Anna, a vile woman whose sole purpose is to play the victim in order to discredit Julia and gain Curtis’s attention.
The novel begins with Julia finding out about her pregnancy and trying to gain courage to tell her husband the news, in hopes that he would give up on getting divorced. But, upon receiving a call from precious Anna, Curtis discards Julia, stopping her mid-sentence. She had to swallow her last words about the baby in her womb and step out of their car.
Later on, Julia asks Curtis, as a final request during their marriage, to ignore another call from Anna and spend the night with her. The next day, after his grandfather’s funeral, she would sign the divorce papers without complaining and leave him to spend his eternity with his mistress.
Although her husband agrees and seems eager to spend the night with his wife, they are interrupted yet again by Anna, who stands in the rain crying and asking for the man’s help. Once she enters the mansion, she puts into motion a vicious plan. Anna falls down the stairs and loses her pregnancy, blaming Julia.
Not only does Curtis believe his protégée, he also makes Julia attend to Anna’s needs, a thing which the woman takes full advantage of, by pouring hot water down her arms and humiliating her while making subtle innuendos about Curtis being passionate in bed.
Julia decides to hide her pregnancy from her husband and even feigns losing the child when he finds out, but eventually Curtis learns the truth and decides to stick with his wife and their baby. Sad to say, Anna won’t back down so easily. She will make Julia’s life a living hell.

One of the things I like about this novel is the fact that the author has rounded great characters. While Julia is grounded and a true heroine, Curtis is the typical male, easily mesmerized by a woman’s vulnerable state and driven by desire.
Julia
She is the heroine of the book, without a doubt. She married Curtis and fell in love with him, knowing that the minute his grandfather would pass away, the man would file for divorce and forget about her.
In spite of being unloved and mistreated by her not-so-affectionate husband, she still tends to him and his needs and accepts his humiliations without complaining. Even while sharing their intimate moments, although he is rough, she is grateful he gave her the time of day.
It’s obvious that her love is unconditional and that her need for her husband’s attention is acute to the point of unbearable pain. She gains the necessary strength to finally stand up for herself and protect her integrity when she becomes pregnant. She turns cold towards her husband and that is what actually catches his attention.
Curtis
Although he seems cold and ruthless towards his wife, deep down he harbors true feelings for her. In his mind, he believed he messed up Julia’s life when he married her and wants to set her free.
Curtis is a man of honor, tending to Anna unconditionally based on a promise he made years ago to protect her. Unfortunately, this duty he believes he has towards the woman makes him disregard Julia and mistreat and humiliate her on and on.
He is easily manipulated by Anna, who never regarded him as a friend or a brother, but as a lover. Even though Curtis is aware of the woman’s intentions towards him, this doesn’t stop him from making mistake after mistake and favoring Anna over Julia.

Not receiving the answer she hoped for, Anna threatens to kill herself and even proceeds to do so by cutting her wrist with a knife. Curtis is taken by surprise by her sudden move, but contained his nervousness and carried the woman to the emergency room.

Curtis awaits nervously for Julia to come home. As soon as she enters the mansion, she heads for the kitchen to cook something for her husband. She knows he must have spent his afternoon in the hospital with Anna and had nothing to eat.
Julia seems so calm and unfazed that is actually bothers Curtis, who demands to know where she’s been. She’s tired of fighting with her husband and, as she knows they are about to separate, Julia tries to make the best of the little time they have left of living together in the mansion. Curtis watches her intently, clearly hurt by her indifference.
