Mia is now working in a bar where she regularly cooks for the guests and arranges the tables for them. On a Friday night when she served her guests food and alcohol, she bumped into the long-lost father of Mackenzie, Ryan Miller, and also her most memorable love interest since their high school times.

When I read the chapters in Secret Baby, I get that Ryan keeps pestering Mia and her daughter, forcing himself to carry Mia’s belongings, demanding Mia to rekindle the relationship with him, and ignoring Mia’s rejection of him. At the same time, Mia already has other men in her workplace who are interested in rescuing her.

Who would Mia choose to be within Secret Baby? Or, would she rekindle her old high school romance with Ryan?

Secret Baby Chapter 1

The stories of Chapter 1 in the Secret Baby novel open up by telling us about a single mother named Mia, who lives in a small town named Texas with her daughter, Mackenzie (nickname: Kenzie). These days, Mia has made sure that nobody knows the identity of her daughter’s father apart from herself and Sarah, her best friend.

Mia doesn’t care if she lives in a small town where people know each other. So, by hiding her daughter’s identity, Mia saves herself and her career. As we read through the paragraphs in Chapter 1 of Secret Baby, we know that Mia is doing a great job to greet her boss professionally, serving her guests with food and alcohol, and so on.

Later on, we recognize the identity of Kenzie’s father as Ryan Miller, Mia’s ex-high school sweetheart who made her pregnant. Ryan keeps on pestering Mia, starting from this chapter. He doesn’t care that Mia is no longer wanting him and he keeps on demanding her rekindling. I’m starting to feel that this one’s an annoying guy!

Secret Baby Chapter 2

Goodness-Guess what, what did I read in this chapter? Chapter 2 of Secret Baby further talks about how Ryan continues to disturb Mia and Mackenzie’s life. At first, the stories open up by telling us about Mia nursing her little Kenzie in her crib. Kenzie will turn two this year, and Mia is diligently picking up her clothes, picking her daughter up, and kissing her daughter.

Later on, the two shops for groceries. The moment when Mia was about to pick the Brussels sprouts in the Secret Baby novel is also the moment when Mia sees the Satan of her life-no, I meant the disturbing Ryan Miller.

Again, Ryan keeps on wanting Mia to get back on him. He even has the nerve to pick on Mia’s daughter in front of Mia, which leads little Kenzie to almost burst into tears out of fear.

Just as Mia thinks she has saved herself and her daughter in the car after paying for the groceries, Ryan re-appears in her car, forcing her to “talk” with him. Plus, he keeps on asking petty questions about Kenzie’s age.

As we read through the paragraphs of this chapter’s stories, we know that Mia also doesn’t write the father’s name on Kenzie’s birth certificate, because she knows something terrible about child custody will happen if the father’s name is on the daughter’s birth certificate.

Secret Baby Chapter 3

In Chapter 3 of Secret Baby, we know that Mia is always having her day off on Sundays and Mondays. So, that Monday, Mia takes Kenzie to her parent’s house to go swimming. It’s for the first time in the whole story that we know that little Kenzie gets to know her grandparents.

Kenzie’s grandmother (or Mia’s mother) keeps on asking about Kenzie’s father and reminding Mia of her reputation of being the town slut. Here, I admire Mia for standing true to her boundaries. No means no, and she’s not going to tell her mother about her past encounters with Kenzie’s father.

Chapter 3 of the Secret Baby novel also tells us the truth that Mia started seeing the pestering Ryan when she was 16. Then, she was pregnant with Kenzie on her 19th birthday. At that time, Ryan was 20, and he demanded to keep the relationship secret, while also cheating on Mia by engaging with another woman.

As Mia attempts to stand up to her decisions, she discovers that Ryan is standing on her porch. Again, he demands “a talk”. Wow, what a disturbing person!
