Book Review: Resisting Mr Kane

Resisting Mr. Kane is a novel about an office romance that happens between a couple with some age gaps. Furthermore, this second book from the London Mister series is a dual-POV book, which means, we get to see each MC’s viewpoint as we read through the chapters in Resisting Mr. Kane.

True to the novel’s title, Mr. Kane a.k.a the handsome-looking CEO and attorney Tristan Kane is the male MC. However, the author of Resisting Mr. Kane introduces the female MC first before introducing the Greek god-like Mr. Kane a.k.a Tristan. The female MC is Elly, a 25-year-old woman who gets hired in Tristan’s law firm seven months after her working holiday period.

In Resisting Mr. Kane, Elly meets Tristan when she was on her working holiday with her friends in Greece. Unfortunately, at that time, Tristan already had a wife and son. However, the author has shown that love knows no boundaries – Elly and Tristan fall in love at the first sight, and as soon as Tristan gets divorced, their chemistries begin to spark.

Now, Tristan in Resisting Mr. Kane doesn’t have any reason to let Elly go. They are meant to be together, after all.

Part 1: Meet The Characters Of Resisting Mr Kane

Elly

The 25-year-old Elly is the lively and charismatic female MC of the Resisting Mr Kane novel. She is a hardworking lady who takes time in researching a company thoroughly instead of wasting her time finding out about who are the higher-ups. When I read Resisting Mr Kane, I also get the impression that there are some parts of the working holiday that Elly enjoys.

One of the most memorable scenes in Resisting Mr Kane about Elly is in the first few chapters when Elly and the handsome Mr Tristan Kane from Madison Legal in London meet for the first time.

Tristan Kane

Tristan Kane (or Mr Kane), the male MC from Resisting Mr Kane, is a 40-year-old man with a Greek god-like appearance, an intimidating and domineering persona, and supreme wealth. He is the CEO of a law firm in London named Madison Legal. All of his employees are wearing expensive and tailored suits – jeans and t-shirts are not welcome in his office.

Tristan already had a wife and a son when he first met Elly during her working holiday periods in Greece. However, things are getting more incompatible between him and his ex-wife, and as the story progresses, he starts to have mutual romantic feelings with Elly.

Part 2: Story Of Resisting Mr Kane

The story of Resisting Mr Kane opens up by telling us that Elly, the 25-year-old main female character, is having her summer working holiday periods with her friend in Greece. There, she serves as a bartender and does some other odd jobs with payments that don’t seem to be on par with the living cost standards.

We witness Elly’s resilience in the first few chapters of Resisting Mr Kane. Elly doesn’t give up, even though her current jobs are not so rewarding. She keeps on finding the fun side of being in Greece, and focuses on polishing her CV and getting the correct answers to interview questions.

What’s more, she gets to meet Tristan Kane, the handsome-looking 40-year-old CEO of the biggest law firm in London, during her working holiday periods.

Tristan’s god-like handsome face and build immediately pique Elly’s interest. It doesn’t matter if Tristan already had a wife and a son at that time. Seven months after her Greece working holiday period ends, Elly gets hired in Tristan’s office at Madison Legal in London. Starting from here, Madison Legal becomes the primary setting of all chapters.

All employees in Madison Legal wear expensive and tailored suits. Things start to get even more complicated when Tristan’s ex-wife appears in Madison Legal, just as Tristan and Elly’s relationship begins to bloom. How will a couple of Resisting Mr Kane novel deal with more problems that will emerge in their relationships?

Part 3: The Author Of Resisting Mr Kane

London is the city that eventually becomes the primary setting in Resisting Mr Kane. Indeed, Rosa Lucas, the author of Resisting Mr Kane, is from Edinburgh – not exactly in London, but it is also a part of the UK. More precisely, Rosa currently lives in the southern part of England’s coast while imagining new plots and characters for her novels.

Rosa Lucas considers herself an expert in writing contemporary romance stories with some dashes of steamy and humorous elements. She believes that a novel’s elements should be fun and entertaining. Many of her readers refer to Rosa’s humor throughout the novels she writes as wicked and fun to read.

Expect lots of humorous scenarios in Resisting Mr Kane. Even though there are some tense scenarios (particularly when Tristan’s ex-wife appears in his law firm), Rosa seems to build the tenses while wrapping the moments with relevant and relatable jokes. Think about a UK version of Rumiko Takahashi writing an office romance novel, and you’ll get the picture.

Resisting Mr Kane is not the only novel that Rosa Lucas has authored. She has written at least three other novels with identical cover designs, and Resisting Mr Kane itself is a part of the London Mister series, one of the series that Rosa Lucas has written.

Part 4: Alternative To Resisting Mr Kane

Resisting Mr Kane is a romance novel that involves lots of professional terms, such as a billionaire, law jobs (or degrees), properties, and so on. I think of Sunstroke when talking about an alternative with similar elements that exist in Dreame platform. When I read Dreame’s Sunstroke, I immediately think that this novel is like a gender-bend version of Resisting Mr Kane.

Dreame’s Sunstroke MC who has a law background is the female MC, and her name is Bailey George. She was retreating with her law partner when she was at Casa Blanca Resort and Spa at Barefoot Bay. There, she meets a person whom she has desired to run away from, and that person is her husband, Zack Wallace.

Summary of Sunstroke:

Sunstroke tells a story about a couple named Zack Wallace and Bailey George. Zack has just graduated from an Engineering major with a GPA of 3.7, and he loves flying so much. Meanwhile, Bailey is a Law major. Zack has promised Bailey to marry her once both of them are graduated.

To Bailey’s shock that she is pregnant before the two are married. On the other hand, Zack doesn’t seem to be able to move on from his loves of flying and helicopter. He doesn’t even think about Bailey. So, Bailey decides to move out, finish her Law major, and eventually, become an attorney who meets so many clients.

One day when Bailey was meeting her law partner at Casa Blanca Resort and Spa at Barefoot Bay, she is shocked once again to find Zack following her. Zack is not alone, instead, he is with their son. So, this part is my reason why I think Sunstroke can be the gender-bend alternative to Resisting Mr Kane.
