Best Romance Book Review: Savage Bonds

Savage Bonds is the second PNR and harem sequel of The Bonds That Tie by J Bree. In other words, Savage Bonds is a continuity to the previous Broken Bonds book. It is still focused on Oli as the main female character.

However, in this sequel, Oli is no longer running away from relationships. She is also already bonded with some of the guys and lives in a place named Draven Mansion.

Now that Oli has her bonds, she experiences even more difficulties in controlling her superpowers, particularly when she senses that her bonds are threatened. In this Savage Bonds book, she also becomes easily jealous and automatically goes into her rage mode when other women are close to any of her bonds.

Oli becomes so uncontrollable in Savage Bonds that everybody around her circle has to calm her down to make sure she uses her power wisely. Even though the title here contains the “Savage” word, I thought “yandere” is more appropriate – after all, the superpower showcased in this book are close to the ones we see in various anime and manhwa.

Part 1: The Characters’ Growth On Savage Bonds

Oli

Oli is no longer the sweet and kind-hearted girl I witness in the previous book. She has transformed into a much braver woman, and her superpower is also stronger in Savage Bonds than in the previous book.

Nonetheless, Oli shows her yandere side in Savage Bonds – almost like Yuno Gasai’s milder version (similar to Kotonoha’s School Days, perhaps?) in terms of her rampage mode whenever other women are getting close or messing around with her guys. Let’s not forget that she can’t control her deadly superpower, yet.

The Guys

Atlas has the most significant growth in Savage Bonds compared to the rest of the guys. He remains the calmest and the most accepting of Oli’s flaws while not losing his composure. Nox, on the other hand, is less forceful than he used to be when he was in the previous book (perhaps, it’s because Nox’s getting closer to Oli).

North has different “destiny” in Savage Bonds, in which we don’t see him quite often starting from the middle chapter of the novel. Even so, Brutus’ nightmares with Nox are scaring other characters, but not Oli.

The Resistance

The Resistance is still the major antagonist in this second sequel of The Bonds That Tie. The Resistance in Savage Bonds is the force that tries to capture Oli when she was trying to save one of her female friends. Plus, the Resistance will stop at nothing to intervene with Oli’s bonds and make Oli even more unable to control her superpowers.

Part 2: Story Of Savage Bonds

The story of Savage Bonds starts by telling us Oli is no longer running away from her bonds. She seems to have overcome her traumatic experiences on bonds in this novel. However, those whole impressions change after the Resistance, the antagonistic power of the novel, enters the scene by trying to capture Oli who was trying to go after her friend.

At the same time, destiny is what makes Oli gets closer to all of her bonds. In Savage Bonds, we know that it’s not only the guys who get stronger as they get closer to Oli – Oli also gets stronger and becomes more uncontrollable. These things, coupled with the Resistance that will stop at nothing to capture and control Oli, are things that add to Oli’s anxiety.

Again, she experiences even more doubts to get closer to any of her bonds, out of fear that her deadly superpower might kill any of them. At the same time, destiny sets her up to spend more time with her bonds.

This opportunity is also the opportunity for Oli to get to know her bonds in a more personal way and not give any energy to everything and everyone who may control her.

“Control” is the key to understanding the theme of Savage Bonds. Will Oli be able to master her self-control -, particularly control of her superpowers?

Part 3: Meet The Author Of Savage Bonds

As the second sequel of The Bonds That Tie by J Bree, J Bree the author of Savage Bonds self-releases this book on September 26, 2021, which means a few months after publishing the first sequel. Now, like any other sequels from the same author, we can read (and purchase) the books by J Bree through different platforms.

J Bree herself has produced 350 pages in this Savage Bonds novel. Even though the novel is not as thick as the previous one, the savage yandere feels throughout the novel’s chapters is more evident.

Here, Oli becomes more protective of her bonds, and her jealousy toward women who get close to her bonds is more than just jealousy when coupled with her power as the Soul Render.

J Bree as the author of Savage Bonds has successfully inserted several inspiring and dark quotes in this novel. We can see the quotes from Oli, Atlas, Sawyer, and other characters, in the first few chapters of the novel. Oh, and, let’s not forget that each of the guys (a.k.a Oli’s bonds) has more personal and lively descriptions than in the previous book.

Lots of trigger warnings here: Violence, bullying, adult-only scenes (particularly the scenes that involve Oli and her bonds), murderous love, and so on. Still, J Bree succeeds in making Savage Bonds an enjoyable book to read.

Part 4: Alternative To Savage Bonds

Do you like fantasy elements like the ones you see in PNR novels like Savage Bonds? Or, do you like the word “savage” so much when you read a novel? Dreame’s Her Savage Mate is a novel that you can read as an alternative to Savage Bonds! First, it also has the word “savage”, and second, it also involves the bonding (a.k.a “mating”) concept.

Meet Amelia Roy, the third daughter of a man who looks for an alliance with the ruthless king of the Lunar world, who, in turn, would be her mate thanks to the fate that the Moon Goddess has set for both of them. Speaking of the ruthless king, Her Savage Mate on Dreame platform is different from Savage Bonds in ways that it shows a savage main male character.

Summary of Her Savage Mate:

Amelia Roy is the main female character of Her Savage Mate. She is a she-wolf of the Shadow pack. Her Alpha father cares for nothing but his power and reputation as an Alpha male werewolf. Amelia’s father also seeks connection with Alexander Mazza, the ruthless Alpha king of the Lunar world and also the Blood Moon pack, to become more powerful.

Neither of Amelia’s parents cares for her as an individual. She is the scapegoat of the pack; all of her pack members think of her as the least beautiful one, not to forget that she has problems with her hot-headed and uncontrollable wolf. At the same time, Alexander Mazza, the Alpha king whom Amelia’s father seeks connection with, wants nothing but a virgin.

Amelia is a virgin regardless of her least attractive appearance. However, it doesn’t stop her parents to give her to the ruthless Alpha… Because Amelia’s parents desire powers and reputations so much.

Ruthless Alpha king, uncontrollable wolf (which is equal to uncontrollable superpowers), and more… Isn’t it so similar to Savage Bonds?
