Best Fantasy Book Review: House Of Earth And Blood

The House Of Earth And Blood book is the first sequel of the author’s new Crescent City series. The primary setting of the House Of Earth And Blood novel is the young adult territory, and this novel involves lots of mythical creatures like half-Faes. Bryce Quinlan, the main female character of this novel, is one of the half-Fae and half-Human creatures in the novel.

Bryce’s living in Nidaros makes her somewhat an outcast in her childhood. After all, the majority of creatures in Nidaros are humans. Fast forward in House Of Earth And Blood, Bryce befriends other living creatures. Plus, she finally lands and secures a job in Griffin Antiquities.

Bryce’s life and career have been steady throughout the first few chapters of House Of Earth And Blood, until she witnesses a female demon kills her best friend. At the same time, we see that Bryce is not strong yet to fight the demon on her own. So, the demon can easily flee while leaving Bryce tired due to her fruitless attempts in hitting the demon.

Later on, two angels come into the scenes of the House Of Earth And Blood, and both of them join Bryce in her journey of getting revenge. As the story progresses, we also find other beings, such as Malakims, Witches, Shifters, and more.

Part 1: Meet The Characters Of House Of Earth And Blood

Bryce Adelaide Quinlan

Bryce is a half-Fae and half-human woman who was born in 15,010 Vanir Era (abbreviated: “V.E.”). Bryce’s human mother was 19 when she gave birth to her. Even so, Bryce ends up getting raised by Ember and Randall Silago, her stepfather. The husband and wife pair taught Bryce lots of self-defense techniques, which makes Bryce a resilient woman.

I would say that Bryce’s determination throughout the House Of Earth And Blood novel is a rare one for a main female character. She’s not the one you’d like to mess around with: She is not only versatile in holding weapons, but she also becomes a researcher in some later chapters of the novel.

Orion “Hunt” Athalar

Orion Athalar, or known in the House Of Earth And Blood novel as “Hunt”, is an Archangel belonging to the Malakim (a.k.a the Fallen Angel) group. As the story progresses, Hunt becomes Bryce’s lover and husband.

One of the most memorable moments in the book is when Hunt exchanges the three magic words (“I love you,”) with Bryce, and that moment was also the moment he realizes he had never said such things to Shahar, his former lover.

Anyway, Hunt was dating Shahar, another Archangel, before getting to know Bryce in a deeper way. Too bad, Shahar dies when she attempts to slay Sandriel, her twin sister, at Mount Hermon.

Part 2: Story Of House Of Earth And Blood

The story of House Of Earth And Blood novel is focused around the life of Bryce Adelaide Quinlan, the half-Fae and half-human woman who lives in a small mountain town named Nidaros with her mother, Ember Quinlan, and her stepfather, Randall Silago. As a teenager, Bryce frequently becomes an outcast due to the majority of human populations in Nidaros.

Let’s not forget that Bryce’s mother is highly protective of her daughter, as she always attempts to prevent Bryce from moving out to another place. Nonetheless, Bryce continues to train in self-defense techniques, and later on, she gets a job as an assistant in Griffin Antiquities.

In addition, Bryce is not alone in her journey; instead, the she-wolf Danika becomes her best friend who lives with her in the same apartment room.

Unfortunately, Bryce finds out that Danika died and cut into pieces as soon as she gets back to her apartment. In addition, she also discovers a feasting demon who kills her friends. Now, it’s time for Bryce to get a revenge – wait! She was also captivated in a… Cell… And two Archangels, Isaiah and Hunt, watching over her while she was in the cell.

The stories of House Of Earth And Blood become even more thrilling as soon as we get into the romantic relationship dynamics between Bryce and Hunt. I’m so delighted in the ways the author pictures Bryce’s softer sides! It gives so many layers to the character’s traits.

Part 3: The Author Of House Of Earth And Blood

Sarah Joseph Maas (or known as Sarah J. Maas in her books) is the author of House Of Earth And Blood. She is currently the #1 New York Times Bestselling Author with so many masterpieces and universes – and the House Of Earth And Blood novel in her new Crescent City series is one of her best-selling novels.

“Ground-breaking” is one of the words that describes the House Of Earth And Blood book by Sarah J. Maas. People can see the dynamics between Faes, Archangels, Malakims, and other beings in this novel, particularly Bryce’s character developments after she exchanges three magic words with Hunt.

Today, Maas has made two sequels of House Of Earth And Blood: The first one specifically highlights Bryce’s life in getting revenge, and the second one focuses on her journey with her husband, Hunt Athalar.

Fighting is always the central theme of all sequels in House Of Earth And Blood… And both Hunt and Bryce refuse to stay silent when their dearest ones are being threatened. Justice must be served! This part, along with the weaponries and skills that each mythical being has, becomes the interesting point(s) from this novel.

The novel itself has been available all around the U.S., the U.K., and Canada. Plus, we can enjoy reading this novel in at least 37 different languages.

Part 4: Alternative To House Of Earth And Blood

House Of Earth And Blood is full of fantasy settings, particularly settings that involve Faes (fairies, I think) and werewolves. Speaking of fairies and werewolves, Dreame also has tons of novels – yet, the one that I’d like to offer as an alternative to Maas’ House Of Earth And Blood is The Fairy’s Forbidden Mate.

Dreame’s The Fairy Forbidden Mate is just like House Of Earth And Blood that it involves fairies and werewolves. The difference is that the werewolf in The Fairy’s Forbidden Mate has longer-lasting and more fortunate life than the dead she-wolf in House Of Earth And Blood.

Bonus point: It is written by JM Snap, Dreame’s Next Top Writer who also specializes in writing all things about fairies (and werewolves).

Summary of The Fairy’s Forbidden Mate:

The Fairy’s Forbidden Mate follows a story about Rhea, a 20-year-old daughter of Alpha and Luna Locke of the Diamond pack. Interestingly, Rhea’s father and mother are also the rulers of the fairy world, which makes Rhea a half-she-wolf and a half-fairy. Unfortunately, even though Rhea is already 20 years old, she has no wolves yet, which means, she can’t have a mate (yet).

From what I’ve understood, mating becomes one of the crucial werewolf issues. So, as the reader of The Fairy’s Forbidden Mate, I also feel the struggle that Rhea has to face.

Rhea’s struggle is getting more intensified as she delves deeper into journeys that bring her away from her parents, just like Bryce in House Of Earth And Blood who is eventually living her life happily separated from her parents.

As the story progresses, Rhea has to prove her worth as the future fairy queen. Talking about the future ruler, isn’t it similar to what Bryce experiences as the Heir of the Starborn Fae in House Of Earth And Blood? Anyway…
