Book Romance Review: Beauty and the Beasts

From the title itself, its focal point is about the drastic change of a maiden’s life after accidentally stumbling upon an eccentric world filled with magical creatures called the ‘beastmen’. In order to survive and not be devoured out of her ignorance to the place, she pretended to be one of them, and chose to conform to their otherworldy lifestyle, despite the danger it impose and the life-sucking affection of two certain beastmen whose too brazen to keep her there, she started to doubt her own judgment.

Part 1: Main Story of Beauty and the Beasts

It all began when Bai Qingqing went lost on the foot of a mountain and was suddenly cornered by gigantic wolves. She thought it was the end, the conclusion of her vibrant life. But as though her prayers successfully reached heaven, something miraculous happened. A massive ferocious leopard appeared out of nowhere and saved her from danger.

It later transformed into a gorgeous man that took Bai Qingqing off guard. She had never seen such a scene before. An animal that could shift into a human? How appalling to the mind. It never crossed her that such creatures indeed exist aside from fairytale books and movies. Her admiration for her mysterious savior snapped when he claimed that she’d be his mate from then on.

Appalled at the request, Bai Qingqing tried to resist, and reasoned her way out of the dilemma, not knowing that she has little chance of escape since the world she knew seemingly vanished and she was transported to a different kind of magical world.

Parker-the leopard that saved her-started firing questions that were too gibberish, she was forced to lie and pretend to be one of them, fearing that once Parker find out that she’s human, it might turn feral and do what the wolves wished to do with her in the first place.

And so, in the hopes that she could avoid another peril in the atypical forest, and gather more information about the strange world that she entered, she consented to Parker’s request, and with little knowledge about the ‘mating thing’ Parker had mentioned, she went to the village with him.

When she finally got there, Bai Qingqing instantly experienced a culture shock, as the norms and everyday activities being practiced there was the complete opposite of what she knew in the city. Parker’s proposition wasn’t as easy and simple as she thought it was.

She’d be his mate for as long as their bond would allow, and she must bear his cubs as a sign of their love. Her shock was high on the roof, she didn’t expect it to be that serious! Not that she resented the whole idea, but she wasn’t yet ready to be a mother. Let alone, be someone’s wife for the rest of their life.

Fearing that she might fail, she sought refuge and solutions to somewhat delay the mating. But as she grew familiar with the whole village, Parker was able to win her heart. While she slowly grew accustomed to their life, she encountered another beast-man, belonging to the most powerful kind and a feral one.

This time, the beast wasn’t as forbearing and merciful as Parker. Curtis-the snake beastman was cold, ruthless, and tough to handle.

A triangle of love soon developed. Bai Qingqing’s objectives gradually changed as she stay longer in the village, in the loving arms of Parker and under the watchful adoration of Curtis. Who will finally end the quarrel? And how would Bai Qingqing pursue her love without hurting any of them?

It’s a waste that I only discovered this novel recently. Of all the thousands of novels fitting the category of the fantasy genre, it’s a struggle to choose what’s going to suit your taste, and what would be worthy of the time you’re ready to invest.

I find all that I’m looking for in this story. The witty dialogues, vibrant characters, and intoxicating round of events, all was compounded in this single tale.

Part 2: Main Characters of Beauty and the Beasts

Bai Qingqing

White as snow, and infinitely gorgeous like a deity.

Looked utterly fragile and innocent on the surface, but she sure knew how to construct her ways to survive. She’s clever, resourceful, and always a curious cat. Though she lacks the physical strength to defend herself against the beasts, she could be strategic enough to elude such dangers. As a city girl, she wasn’t acquainted with life in the countryside.

Her ignorance, though, didn’t hinder her from being used to the new environment in the city of the beasts. She was fast to adapt which favored her well. Her stay in the forest made some drastic changes to her character, and her development was majestically well put, it would be hard not to take a liking to her.

2. Parker (a leopard beastman)

The cheeky leopard beastman became instantly smitten with Bai Qingqing as soon as he saw how dazzling she was. He felt a distinct connection to her that he knew deep in his heart, would be impossible to cut loose. His first instinct was always to protect Bai Qingqing from all the possible jeopardy.

His forthrightness may be sometimes hard to administer, and may sometimes make you do a facepalm, but it’s one of the factors that makes him the most interesting and amusing. His bubbly and loyal character would also melt your heart.

During the weeks he spent hovering around Bai Qingqing, his development came off naturally, benefitting some of the important points of the plot. Without his very existence, the story wouldn’t be as wholesome as it is.

3. Curtis (a snake beastmen)

Though his introduction induced him as cold, ruthless, and savage, Curtis proved in the progressing chapters that it would be wrong to judge him for his nature. His protectiveness over Bai Qingqing was quite admirable.

his eagerness to provide what’s best for her also makes him a deserving one to pair with Bai Qingqing, as well. His character was quite intriguing because of the mysterious aura that always surrounds him. As for his development in the story, it was certainly remarkable. Not the one you could easily forget and shrug off.
